Home charger installation for electric cars: who installs in Serbia

Installing a home charger is not just hanging a device on the wall. The electrician runs a dedicated circuit from the distribution board to the charging point, fits the protection devices, connects and sets up the charger and finally tests the installation. That is why the price depends mostly on the distance to the board and on how the cable is run — through the wall, in trunking or along the garage wall. Companies that publish a price usually state what is included in “standard installation” and estimate any additional work on site. If you have already bought a charger, the list also includes electricians who install the device you bring.

What to ask before you accept a quote

1. What exactly the price includesUp to how many metres of cable, which protection devices, materials and the site visit — and how much each metre or hour of work beyond that costs.
2. Which protection is installedThe charger needs a type A RCD combined with 6 mA DC fault current detection in the charger itself, or a type B RCD; an ordinary type AC RCD is not enough. The explanation is in the safety and test certificate guide.
3. Whether you get a test certificate (atest)A written test report on the installation is proof for you, the building, the garage owner and the insurer, and charger manufacturers require installation by a licensed electrician as a condition of the warranty.
4. Whether the approved power is enoughAn 11 kW charger draws as much as several large household appliances together. If the approved (contracted) power is low, the charger is set to a lower power or the approved power is increased through Elektrodistribucija (the grid operator); what a kilowatt of approved power costs is on the EPS electricity prices page.
5. In a building: who does the paperworkA charger in a building's garage requires the consent of the residents' assembly, and the fair way to measure its consumption is with a separate meter — see the guides assembly consent and who pays for electricity.
