In the EU, one in five new cars is electric
From January to August 2026, electric cars made up 21,7 % of new registrations in the European Union, according to ACEA data.

The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) reported on 24 September that 5,3 % more new cars were registered in the EU from January to August than a year earlier. There were 1.641.333 fully electric cars, or 21,7 % of the market, compared with 15,8 % in the same period of 2025.
Petrol cars fell to 21,7 %, from 28 % a year earlier, and diesels to 7,3 %. Hybrids that cannot be plugged in have the largest share, 36,6 %, and plug-in hybrids 10 %. Electric cars grew the most in France (+74,2 %) and Germany (+53,1 %).
What it means
In Serbia the share is much smaller: in the first half of 2026, 535 new electric cars were registered, 2,74 % of new vehicles. The figures for Serbia are on the statistics page.
