Volkswagen is preparing a recall of several electric models from the ID. family in Germany and other European markets. Internal checks showed that some battery cells do not meet standards because of manufacturing faults at a supplier. According to a company statement reported by Euronews, a fire cannot be ruled out in extreme cases.

According to Handelsblatt, as reported by electrive and Euronews, the ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, ID. Buzz and Cupra Born built from 2023 to 2025 may be affected. The company has not yet confirmed the list of models or the number of vehicles. A spokesperson said several thousand vehicles are affected in Germany. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) had not published the recall by 16 October. In the UK and the US the recall is already under way; in the US it covers about 22.000 ID.4 vehicles.

As a first measure, Volkswagen is limiting charging of affected vehicles to at most 80 % of battery capacity through a software update. Owners receive a letter with the next steps, and the batteries are checked at a service centre. If no fault is found, the limit is lifted.

What it means

The ID.3, ID.4 and ID.7 are sold in Serbia through the importer Porsche SCG. By 16 October the importer's website had no notice about this recall. Owners of an ID. model from 2023–2025 can have the chassis number checked at an authorised service centre and, until it is checked, not charge the battery above 80 %.
