The recall Volkswagen announced in mid-October is now official. Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is running three recalls: two for the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID. Buzz and one for the Cupra Born. According to figures reported by Autohaus and electrive, about 72.700 vehicles are affected worldwide, about 10.000 of them in Germany. Škoda is not affected, according to the same sources.

The range of vehicles is wider than first reported. Volkswagen's first recall covers vehicles built from 13 July 2022 to 6 June 2025, the second from 18 September 2023 to 27 June 2025. For the Cupra Born, production from September 2022 to May 2024 is affected. The cause is possible manufacturing defects in individual battery cells, which in rare cases can overheat. According to the KBA, no cases of damage or injury have been reported so far.

Until the check at a workshop, owners should charge the battery to 80 % at most and put a warning sticker in the car. Where technically possible, the limit is applied automatically through a software update. Owners are notified by letter, and a permanent fix has not yet been defined, according to electrive.

What it means

On 23 October, the website of Volkswagen's importer for Serbia had no notice about this recall. Owners of an ID. model or a Cupra Born built between 2022 and 2025 can ask an authorised workshop whether their chassis number is affected and, until then, should not charge the battery above 80 %.
